CFPB operational freeze
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was ordered to halt enforcement activities and to stop accepting new consumer complaints. Much of its staff was placed on administrative leave.
This action has been completed. The work now is reversal.
Detail
An early-2025 directive from the CFPB's acting director halted all ongoing enforcement, rulemaking, and supervisory activity, and closed the bureau's office. Congressional Republicans have separately introduced bills to abolish the CFPB outright; those have not passed. Reversal requires new leadership; full restoration requires reopening enforcement pipelines that have been dormant for months.
